The 100,000 Recitations on Merit Accumulations

17.6.2005 - 19.6.2005

Conducted by : H.H Garab Dorje Rinpoche

Venue : Chinese Assembly Hall

100,000 Recitations On Merit Accumulation Prayers

Accumulation of merits is very important regardless if you are a Buddhist, Christian or Muslim.  There are many approaches in accumulating merits. Buddhism such as Hinayana, Mahayana and Vajrayana has its own methods to accumulate merits.  Without accumulating merits, it is nearly impossible to attain enlightenment.  As stated by the Lord Buddha, even for our present lives' happiness, we need a vast accumulation of merits and this is commonly believed by all Buddhists.  There are numerous ways (either difficult or easy) in accumulating merits.  As in difficult way, Siddhartha left the palace and kingdom behind and engaged in an ascetic path, without food and movement, vowing to exert himself in his meditation until he reached his goal of enlightenment.  Buddha also sacrificed his body as food for a hungry mother tiger and her cubs.  In this modern generation, such hard practice is no longer existed.  Of course they are many people who forego marriage and renounce their personal ownership, become monks and nuns and stay in retreat for 3 years, 6 years or 9 years and their intentions are to accumulate merits in order to attain enlightenment.  In this degenerate age, it is very difficult for a lay person to practice in such a way.  Therefore, one needs to generate and accumulate inconceivable merits by making offerings, reciting mantras, sponsoring and supporting the sanghas and helping the poor.

We are honoured to have the presence of Rinpoche in conducting this puja.  Needless to say, with Rinpoche’s tireless quest and compassionate vision to benefit all sentient beings, thus, this puja is organised.  It is arranged in the easiest manner to accumulate extensive merits by just reciting few lines of powerful offering prayers and this will bring tremendous and extraordinary blessings.  Rinpoche encourages all his dharma disciples, devotees and fervent supporters not to miss this golden opportunity to participate the puja.  The purpose of this puja is to accumulate merits for the happiness of present life and for the sake of attaining enlightenment.

   The Benefits Of The Puja

The 100,000 recitations on merit accumulation prayers, also known as TSHOG BUM is the highest offerings in Ati-Yoga.  Through Rinpoche's dharmadhatu meditation and the recitation of yidam's (Krodikali) mantra, all holy ingredients which fill the sphere will be blessed and transformed into great blissful amrita and the five blissful sounds.

With Rinpoche's powerful meditation, the spheres of offerings which primordially free from elaboration are offered to Gurus of three times in the 10 directions, Yidams, Dakinis, Dharmapalas, wealth deities, land Gods and so forth.  The Tshog Bum is based on a short version and it will be done in 100,000 recitations and visualizations of offering prayers.

The benefits of joining the puja :

*** Remove outer, inner and secret obstacles.

 i) Outer obstacles - Purifiy the disorders by the four physical elements such as catastrophe, lightning, weapons, robbery and save from the attack by the demons, elephants, wild animals.

ii) Inner obstacles - Free from the multitude of sufferings inflicted by evil forces, contagious diseases and poisons.

iii) Secret obstacles - Eliminate the 5 poisons (desire, hatred, ignorant, pride & jealousy).

*** All one's wishes will be accomplished and one's activities fulfilled.

 The Krodikali Initiation

The Krodikali puja is derived from the many practices of Dudjom New Treasure Lineage.  It is actually a CHOD, a Tibetan term means "to sever".  This practice severs the transmigrations in samsara.  The benefits of this puja are of two folds.  To a keen dharma practitioner, this practice severs ego and eliminates the three poisons (greed, hatred and ignorance).  To the public who attending this puja, by just hearing the chanting, the sound of damarus and the sound of "PHET" pronounces by the Vajra Master, obstacles and undesirable elements will be abolished.  Chod is a powerful means of accumulating merit because one is practicing the generosity of offering one's body.  This practice emphasizes cutting through grasping at the dualistic mind to realize complete selfless compassion.

Krodikali Puja

In Vajrayana, women are held to be the essence of wisdom and numerous female manifestations of different energies are known as dakinis. These dakinis played a key role in the life of many of the great masters of the past.  "The body is the basis of the accomplishment of wisdom. And the gross bodies of men and women are equally suited. But is a woman has strong aspiration, she has higher potential." (page 86, Dowman, K., Sky Dancer; The secret life and songs of the Lady Yeshe Tsogyal, Routledge & Kegan Paul,1984)  This verse is quoted by Guru Padmasambhava.   Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche explains that women have a natural affinity for working with energy and visional and Garab Dorje, the founder of the Dzogchen teachings, went so far as to say that the body of light or rainbow body would be women.

Recognizing the body as the root of one's attachment to self, Krodikali formulated 'The Quintessential Accomplishment in Accordance with the Lineage of the Vajra Essence' to be a practice that would destroy this fundamental attachment and simultaneously develop compassion for all beings. On the surface, Krodikali seems to be an offering of only the body. Nevertheless, during the visualization the body has been identified with the universe, and consequently the offering means the offering of all things desirable. Thus, it is not just aiming at reduction of attachment to body but also of all attachment.

          Krodikali practice could be characterized as a practice which frees one;

  • outwardly from attachments to the body

  • inwardly to sensual objects

  • secretly to all desires and enjoyments

  • and most secretly to self-centeredness

In the practice of 'The Quintessential Accomplishment in Accordance with the Lineage of the Vajra Essence', from pure vision, there is the laughter of Troma which overcomes and suppresses through splendor. The natural display of primordial wisdom, as the magical manifestation of boundless dakinis, shatters the gods and demons of duality within the uncontrived fundamental nature of the nonexistent self.

By the truth of refuge in the Triple Gems, the compassionate love of the dakinis of the three enlightened embodiments and the blessing of the five great mothers, the ruling male demonic forces are overcome, the demoness female forces are overcome, the earth lords and subterranean demonic forces are overcome and the demonic forces of the place and body are overcome. All are completely suppressed by splendor.

The central practice of this Trogma Nagmo is to cut away the false concept of ego by offering one's own body to the divine and the demons. This practice can help one to reduce one's karmic debt, thus eliminating innumerable obstacles in worldly life. It would also improve one's state of mind by generating the understanding of emptiness, thus developing that profound wisdom.
