ORGYEN MENLA PUJA CEREMONY5.7.2003 ~ 7.7.2003Conducted by : Dungse Garab Dorje Rinpoche Venue : THAN HSIANG TEMPLE, PENANG Introduction to PujaGenerally, the honorific "BUDDHA" is the precious name attributed to those who are enlightened. The Enlightened Ones again have manifestations, depending on the needs of sentient beings. Consequently, there are thousands and millions of Buddhas benefiting the beings in samsara. For instance, Medicine Buddha is for the benefit of the sick, while Amitayus is for longevity, Vajrasattva for purification of negative karma and Guru Vatsuratna is supplicated for luck. This time, we are performing the puja of Medicine Buddha. As a matter of fact, there are two methods to the practice of medicine Buddha, namely the Tantra and Sutra methods. This puja follows the Tantra way; it is called Orgyen Menla or Guru Bekanze (in Sanscrit). The deity is concerned with healing. Deity, in this context refers to the Enlightened Wisdom Deity, certainly not local deities which are bound by defilements. According to Buddha Dharma (Buddha's teachings), there are two kinds of sicknesses - internal and external. Internal sickness means the "three poisons" comprising greed, hatred and delusion. Buddha Dharma states that when one's three poisons increase, the external sickness that is one's physical ailments arise subsequently. Ultimately, Medicine Buddha is concerned with healing one's internal sickness. So, as we may refer to Medicine Buddha is concerned with healing one's, we may also say that He helps us to purify our negative karma. As external sickness such as cancer, AIDS and 'naga diseases' are not easily cured with conventional treatments because the treatment do not address the internal cause the three poisons, then Medicine Buddha puja / practice will be of tremendous help in their healing. Thus, Medicine Buddha is important in one's daily life. There are many ways for receiving the blessings of the Deity - through chanting of Medicine Buddha's mantra, performing the puja and taking the blessing of the initiation. In Malaysia, it is difficult to invite Rinpoche or Lamas to perform the puja in one's home. Realizing that, the organized has specially organized this puja to enable people to receive Medicine Buddha's blessings. This puja is performed according to detailed procedures which includes the construction of a Mandala of Orgyen Menla. The mandala symbolizes the pure land of Orgyen Menla. According to Orgyen Menla text, this mandala bestows blessings of "Liberation of Sight"; whoever sets eyes on it will be purified of negative karma and sickness. In this puja, initiations will be given. In Vajrayana, the initiation is the most powerful and fastest way to receiving blessings. It is also very important that the Vajra Master and Lamas conducting the puja be from a real Buddhist lineage; unbroken from Buddha's time, through a lineage of masters right down to the Vajra Master himself. Nowadays, many unscrupulous people claim to be Tantric or Vajrayana master and go on to con money and destroy the lives of Buddhists, besides contaminating the name of Buddhism. Buddhists should extremely careful of such people. By joining this puja and doing prostrations to the mandala and reciting mantras with faith, devotion and pure motivations, one will gain immeasurable benefits, therefore, Rinpoche advises that Buddhists do not miss this golden opportunity.
